Clare Johnston is Emeritus Professor at the Royal College of Art and a Textile Designer for Fashion and Interiors.
In my early career I designed Printed Textiles for international Fashion and Textile Design companies including Yves St Laurent, Cacharel, Diane,Von Furstenberg, Bloomingdales, Mantero and Ratti. I worked with Walker Rice Textiles and Nigel French Enterprises. I held senior positions in UK companies, Head of Design at Liberty of London and Specialist Colour and Pattern designer for the Marks and Spencer Design team.
After 15 years as Head of Textiles at the RCA, in 2015 I stepped down to return to my creative practice, while continuing as Emeritus Professor of Textiles, Senior Research Fellow at the RCA and Visiting Professor at Swedish School of Textiles Boras . Since 2014 I have worked closely with the EU funded Marie Slidovnik Curie ArcInTexETN project at the RCA.
I have been a member of the British Textile Colour Group and Committee member of Texprint for many years .I am currently a judge for the Fashion Awareness Direct competition and Graduate Fashion Week Textile award.In 2013 I was a judge for the Premiere Vision International Trade Exhibition in Paris.I worked as an Academic Advisor for many International Universities including Hong Kong Poly University, Tsing Hua,University Beijing, Hong Kong Design Institute, Cornell University and Rhode Island School of Art USA.
